Travels to Prague and the Prague Zodiac - A 37 - Oct 2008
Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic, is reportedly the sixth most visited city in Europe after Paris, London, Rome, Madrid and Berlin. Having spent a week there around the time of the Libra equinox this year, I can understand why it is so popular. It is not only the beautiful medieval layout of the old city, Prague Castle (the largest castle in the world), Charles’ Bridge and the numerous cathedrals and churches, but also the atmosphere of deep history that pervades the cobbled laneways and market squares.

Prague Astrological Clock (Photo: Agent 37)
One particularly interesting attraction that will interest astrologers is the Astrological Clock, constructed in 1410, that adorns the southern wall of the Old Town City Hall. This serves as a sort of focus for the historical importance of Prague with respect to the development of ideas about the cosmos. For it was in this city that Johannes Kepler lived between 1600 and 1612, during which time he observed the supernova of 1604 in the constellation Ophiuchus, and he formulated the first two laws of planetary motion; he worked as assistant to the great astronomer/astrologer Tycho Brahe, and also as astrological advisor to Emperor Rudolph II. Tycho Brahe himself, the great mapper of the heavens, who had previously moved from Denmark to Bohemia, is buried near the Astrological Clock.
The Astrological Clock is a remarkable instrument, all the more so because of the epoch in which it was constructed. It displays clock time, sidereal time (indicated by the small star), as well as the zodiacal positions of the sun and moon, and the angles of Ascendant and Midheaven.
Astrologer Michal Maryska conducts astrological walking tours of Prague, and I can warmly recommend that anyone with an interest in things astrological should contact him and arrange to meet up. His website is Prague Insights.com. Michal has studied the placements of landmarks and sites of historical significance, as well as the geometry of the solstice rising and setting points of the sun, seen from the centre of Prague. He has used the alignments derived from this to construct a zodiac complete with its twelve signs, radiating from a certain point in the centre of the old city. During the tour, it becomes quickly apparent that Michal’s knowledge of European history and culture is impressive and this is utilised to great effect in explaining the essence of each of the twelve signs in a way that brings the past to life.

St Vitus Cathedral & Prague Castle, on the 0º Cancer line of the Prague Zodiac (Photo: Agent 37)
As luck would have it, I took the tour on the very day of the Libra Equinox, and with only one hour to go to the exact moment of the sun’s ingress into Libra, Michal and our small group sat in the famous Café Slavia, exactly on the 0º Libra line, as we took a break before embarking on the second half of the walk, through the zones from Libra to Pisces. Such synchronistic experiences seem to abound in this wonderful Gothic city, one to which I will most definitely return in the future.

The Australian Standing Stones
The Australian Standing Stones are located 1.3 kms East of the New England Highway, on the right hand side of the Gwydir Highway overlooking the town of Glen Innes in Centennial Parklands, signs all the way. These Australian Standing Stones in Glen Innes are probably the first of their kind built anywhere in the world for 3500 years. They are also unique in the southern hemisphere and reflect Glen Innes's heritage where the first settlers, largely Scots, arrived in 1838.
The Stones are the official national monument to Australia's Celtic pioneers and venue for the annual Australian Celtic Festival.
The placement of the stones viewed from above, form the five "stars" of the Southern Cross and the Stones are aligned with the Summer and Winter Solstices.
Could we possibly have more of these types of sacred places built elesewhere around the world?
EthnoCosmology Museum and Observatory Lithuania-
For those finding themselves in Lithuania and interested in Cosmology, this place is well worth a visit. A collection of all sorts of artifacts, implements, objects made by the ancient Lithuanians, used as decorations or practical objects with cosmological motifs, stars, moons, suns in various forms and patterns. Like many ancient cultures the pagan Lithuanians had a strong resonance with nature and the cosmos. This museum is a great collection of all things cosmologically related even an ancient I Ching bowl from the east.
The Museum is built into the side of a hill, you meander through a cave and end up climbing a steep soviet built staircase to what seems the top of the world, finding yourself on top of a pristine forest and overlooking calm clear lakes. An experience well worth the visit. There is an observatory attached to museum - check times etc, on website as this place is in the country and does things at it’s own pace.

Important C*I*A Note about the Zones
Here at the CIA we respect and acknowledge astrology as a vast and diverse subject. It’s important to note that the signs, houses and planets have evolved out of separate meanings and symbolism, even though we group them together in our zones (eg. Zone 1 as Aries, Mars & 1st house).
