JUNE 2014 – SOLSTICE AND LUNATION REPORTS
Each Solstice and Equinox marks a seasonal change. The June Solstice when the Sun reaches its most northerly aspect sees the Sun pause in its journey over the Tropic of Cancer, before heading southward once more.
Astrologers use Solstice and Equinox charts to assess the coming trends for the three months ahead.
The Moon, the ruling planet of Cancer, is an important feature of each June solstice chart. This year the Moon is in Aries, sitting close to radical and freedom loving Uranus and the Moon’s South Node. This suggests the likelihood of some unsettling reactions. This is also a highly instinctual and intuitive combination implying a willingness to take risks and try new things. The Moon and its companions are opposing a number of planets and asteroids in Libra, so there are still some echoes of the cardinal grand cross bubbling away.
The Moon represents habits and unconscious patterns that are laid down and filed away in the mind that are interconnected by their emotional content. Our personal reactions to particular events or situations can sometimes be out of proportion and distorted if a current event triggers the same emotional response that we have felt previously.
Uranus, Moon and South Node together suggest the potential for wild over-reactions that hark back to some past experience. Since this is a Solstice chart, the effects are likely to reverberate for several months.
We might expect some primal reactions to erupt from the unconscious. Other people might overreact to what we are saying or doing. Equally, we may find that we suddenly become angered, emotional, or behave in unpredictable ways when a painful memory resurfaces.
Meanwhile, Chiron is stationing retrograde. The archetypal wounded healer is also making a trine to Saturn. This offers us the opportunity to examine the past and discover if our responses are based on a belief that is no longer true. Awareness of our behaviour is the first step in changing it. Unconscious reactions and negative beliefs can be healed using tools such as hypnosis.
Since Mercury has just reached inferior conjunction it is a good time to look within and examine our thinking and beliefs.
Communicating how we feel may be difficult. Mercury and Gemini are more comfortable in expressing ideas and thoughts and engaging in social interaction, rather than expressing feelings or emotions.
With the Moon so prominent now, suppressing uncomfortable emotions or feelings is likely to make matters worse.
By being conscious of our behaviour and honestly examining our feelings and communicating them rationally we can strengthen our hearts and our personal relationships.
SAGITTARIUS FULL MOON
13 JUNE 2014
In last month’s Full Moon report we talked about the federal budget and how it was likely to be harsh.
‘’Limitations and boundaries are Saturn’s domain. With Saturn in close proximity to the Earth and the Moon, we are likely to feel a tightening associated with cutbacks.
This chart reflects the mood and the news reports indicating there is going to be pain felt in the hip pocket.”
The longer cycle of Pluto’s transit through Capricorn is asking for some collective belt-tightening because it is imperative to live within our means. But this budget has targeted those who are least able to afford it, while ignoring the corporate sector and big business. It remains to be seen if this budget will get passed by the senate. The June Full Moon may bring this matter to a head.
Mercury stations retrograde on June 7, the second retrograde stint for the trickster planet this year. These regular cycles recur at 120 degree intervals, three times each year for a period of three weeks at a time.
This year, these retrogrades are starting at around 3 degrees of water signs and track back into air signs.
Mercury is not that comfortable in water signs, for the water element is irrational, imaginative, caring and compassionate. Mercury is associated with the air element and also earth, which are left-brained rational and logical.
Since Mercury backtracks across the Cancer-Gemini border, it is possible now to create an internal dialogue between our feelings and our thoughts, although this might be easier said than done.
The Moon and its dispositor Jupiter are positioned in one another’s natural sign, hence in mutual reception. They are also in quincunx aspect. The 150 degree aspect creates a link between planets that have neither polarity, nor quality, nor element in common. It is an aspect associated with discomfort and stress that can manifest as health problems.
We could say that the Full Moon and Jupiter are swimming in the same pond, but they have never met before. Mutual receptions tend to create a circuit of energy whereby each planet has to check in with the other before they can express their energy fully. Each possesses something the other needs, but they are not really willing to admit it. Nevertheless, they must work out how to cooperate.
This Full Moon seems to be asking us to create a dialogue with the unfamiliar. We might have to step out of our comfort zone, or walk in another’s shoes. In order to get what we want, we will have to negotiate. But what happens if we cannot find any common ground?
CANCER NEW MOON
27 JUNE 2014
The sign of Cancer is often underrated. We tend to hear words like maternal, domestic, homely and sensitive when discussing this somewhat shy and secretive water sign.
Cancer’s strengths are often overlooked or underestimated. Qualities such as tenacity and business acumen go hand in hand with a radar like intuition and high degree of imagination to create a complex personality that is tough on the outside and sweet on the inside, much like the crab itself.
The cardinal side of Cancer tends to be overlooked, in favour of its watery and maternal qualities. But Cancer is indeed a cardinal sign and as such, it is associated with initiative and leadership.
Each year at this time the Cancer New Moon instils a feeling of belonging. There is a sense that we must return home once more.
Security is a very important part of the Cancerian archetype. If we are feeling insecure, we cannot thrive and grow. If the roots of the tree are not embedded in the earth and not receiving moisture and nutrients, then it will not grow into maturity.
Do we feel safe and secure? Do we feel we belong? Where do we belong? What nurtures and nourishes us? What is our intuition telling us? This New Moon is the perfect time to reflect upon these questions and initiate a plan that will help us feel more secure so we can thrive and grow.
As a symbol of growth and expansion, Jupiter in Cancer has been helping us grow in ways that may not seem immediately evident. Cancer is a private sign, so this transit has been mostly about inner growth. Soon, Jupiter will begin a new solar cycle and enter Leo. This will kick off a more outgoing, dynamic and confident phase of activity. We will find our place in the Sun. Before we embark on any big projects or the next phase of growth, this New Moon provides us with some quiet time for reflection.
With a trine to Neptune, this New Moon is perfect for a mid-year retreat. Reflection, meditation and visualisation transport us to a world of dreams and imagination, where we can harness our creative potential.
Consciously engaging with the unconscious mind we arrive at a place where anything is possible. We know where we belong, what nurtures us and where we are heading.
