When the great moment came and the Beasts spoke, he [Uncle Andrew (a “dreadfully practical” man)] missed the whole point; for a rather interesting reason. When the Lion had first begun singing, long ago when it was still quite dark, he had realised that the noise was a song. And he had disliked the song very much. It made him think and feel things he did not want to think and feel. Then, when the sun rose and he saw that the singer was a lion (“only a lion,” as he said to himself) he tried his hardest to make believe that it wasn’t singing and never had been singing – only roaring as any lion might in a zoo in our own world. “Of course it can’t really have been singing,” he thought, “I must have imagined it. I’ve been letting my nerves get out of order. Whoever heard of a lion singing?” And the longer and more beautifully the Lion sang, the harder Uncle Andrew tried to make himself believe that he could hear nothing but roaring. Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed. Uncle Andrew did. He soon did hear nothing but roaring in Aslan’s song. Soon he couldn’t have heard anything else even if he had wanted to. And when at last the Lion spoke and said, “Narnia, awake”, he didn’t hear any words: he heard only a snarl. And when the Beasts spoke in answer, he heard only barkings, growlings, baying and howlings. And when they laughed – well, you can imagine. – from Chapter 11, The Magician’s Nephew, The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis
Is the above extract from The Narnia Chronicles an exercise of pure imagination to entertain young children and deluded adults alike or was C. S. Lewis onto something, embedding a “forgotten” reality within the text of a fantasy story about other worlds where every facet of reality can not only communicate with each other but is teeming with consciousness? Lewis’ Narnia is alive with talking animals, plants, therianthropes, inanimate objects, and it sounds much like the world that all our indigenous tribes tell us that we actually live within. Yet surely that is not possible? Surely matter is matter; a plant is merely an oxygen/ carbon dioxide regulating system; a tree is for paper and furniture; animals are for food or domestic entertainment; fish, like sheep, are stupid; and humans are the elite species on the Earth, since we are supposedly uniquely adept at utilising systems of symbolic communication such as language for self-expression, the exchange of ideas, and organisation. (In other words, we can write, talk, think, are conscious of ourselves!!) Without going into the academic debate about what defines consciousness or life, put in simple terms, we are taught that if you can’t prove something, it does not exist.
Kangaroo: There is nothing on that speck.
Horton: But I heard it.
Kangaroo: Did you? Really? Oh my! Then how come I don’t hear anything. Well? If you can’t see, hear, or feel something it doesn’t exist. Believing in tiny imaginary people is just not something we do. Or tolerate here in the jungle of Nool.
Horton: Really? Cause I verified I really tried, I can find somebody who believes what I’m saying.
Kangaroo: You will do nothing of the sort. You will not breathe the word of this lie to anyone else. Especially the children. I do not want you poisoning their minds with this nonsense. Our community has standards, Horton. If you want to remain a part of that I recommend you follow them. Have a nice day.
This interchange takes place between the fictional Horton (an elephant) and the Kangaroo in Dr. Seuss’ classic Horton Hears a Who, and it nicely sums up the prevailing attitude towards nature and reality. When confronted by a notion that pushes the frontiers of consensus reality, ridicule, stemming from fear of the unknown, tends to be used to force conformity. Matter, after all, is inert, inanimate and lacking consciousness. What did our ancestors know after all – they had smaller brains; lived within a deluded magical consciousness, since they had less factual knowledge about nature after all. Modern humans have mastered myriad rational approaches to invent countless ingenious ways to test and ultimately master nature and have created endless possible ways to manipulate the tangible world. After all our lives are healthier, wealthier, happier, more fulfilled, cleaner and more educated than ever before. The earth speaks? Pah. That’s some new age fantasy talk.
Yet, have you ever thought about how we really figured nature out prior to science? Where did we get our plant lore from, for example? Was it really all simple trial and error? Was it as simple as watching someone die eating a poisonous red berry inspiring the rest of the community not to eat that poisonous red berry? How did the indigenous Amazonian tribes know about anaesthetic before western medicine did? Is it possible that plants talk? Prior to the 2nd February 1966, Dr. Cleve Backster didn’t think so. But when his lie detector recorded a rapid response to his thought of burning the leaves of his dracaena pot plant, he had some serious re-thinking to do.
Having moved into private practise after years of perfecting the first standardized system for lie detection for the CIA, Backster pulled an all-nighter as he was trying to conduct research into his polygraph techniques. As always happens in the small hours of the night when we enter into a hypnogogic state, an idea took root in his mind that he could not shake. A message, or gift, that arose during the period known as the first sleep. He became consumed with the notion of connecting his plant to the detector to see what would happen. Much to his surprise, the plant did not have a smooth, flat pattern of electrical activity, but appeared to be changing moment to moment, just as it does with humans. In further testing, Backster tried a series of physical tests, such as stabbing the leaves with a pen, but to no avail. However at 7:14am he imagined burning the plant. Simultaneously the polygraph recording pen moved rapidly to the top of the graph, indicating a dramatic excitation. It was as though the plant could read his mind. As the plant continued to have what would be considered an enormous, panicked reaction, Backster stopped thinking about hurting the plant and the polygraph returned to a normalised trace signature.
Is it possible that nature is conscious and that our predecessors were not deluded simpletons?
Okay, I hear you say. This is interesting, but what has it got to do with this forth coming New Moon? After all, this article is supposed to be an astrological reflection on the sign of Virgo.
There are different levels to which we can interpret any event or person. We can take things literally or symbolically; we can describe the physicality of something, or its meaning. The Simpsons cartoon can be viewed as a simple entertaining cartoon, or a comic satirical take on human dysfunctionality. Since astrology does not exist independently from the cosmos, this multi-tiered level of reality also exists within astrological interpretation. The manifestation of each astrological archetypal potential depends ultimately upon the conscious awareness and openness of the person seeking to interpret that potentiality.
All astrological signs arise from the combinations of two fundamental building blocks– an element and a mode. The four elements used within the western tradition essentially describe four primary states of consciousness. Each is expressed in one of three ways – outwardly, inwardly and changeably. The combination of both element and mode gives rise to the 12 signatures of consciousness – the signs of the zodiac.
Most of what you have read about Virgo stems from the prevailing consciousness through which astrologers have operated – that of a deterministic and rational materialism. The Earth element is seen as the lowest vibrational state within consciousness and deals fundamentally with the solid, real world. Hence Earth is grounded, matter of fact, born to serve, industrious, methodical and efficient. The language commonly associated with the Mutable mode is one of enquiry, curiosity, flexibility and changeableness. When this mode is expressed through Earth we find an ingenuity of methodological practise that demonstrates the precision of spirit as it expressed through human rationality. Indeed we could argue the point that the entire nature of modern science is Virgoan with its obsession with testing nature, improving it and analysing it, seeking a rational explanation to facilitate a mastery over it.
Yet if you observe the surface of something, that is exactly what you observe – the surface!
Like Dr. Backster, science is starting to come to terms with the idea that nature possesses, like humans, an interior dimension; that it is not rational; and does not respond in linear, predictable ways. It thinks. It is alive. Therefore it makes choices.
By extension, if nature is alive, surely communication is two ways between all aspects of nature and not just one way, from the elite hominids to nature.
I know that many of you reading or listening to this note are immersed in some form of holistic therapeutic body practise that requires listening to what the body is saying, like Amatsu, Kinesiology, Lomilomi massage; or are involved in disciplines that involve more natural practises like shamanism, herbalism, crystal therapy; that takes for granted the intelligence of nature. You know that the earth speaks; that it communicates; that it is conscious. You will undoubtedly be able to share with me myriad examples and research that demonstrates the interiority of nature. Certainly I could take up much more of your time with further stories of nature’s communication. However I decided to focus on Backster’s work since his work remains largely unknown within the science community, since it is too threatening to the status quo to accept. It reminds me of the Kangaroo in Dr. Seuss’ Horton.
Backster’s story, the experiences of indigenous shamans, the myths of our ancestors all point towards the true meaning of Virgo – the two way exchange of information between matter and humans.
And you don’t have to be a Virgo to get this fact. That the archetype of Virgo exists implies that EVERYONE can listen and tune into what nature is telling us.
But it is also true to say, that like Uncle Andrew, we, as a collective, have a choice to listen or not. Many people choose to ignore what they bodies are telling them; what foods they should or shouldn’t eat, over riding their bodily instincts with their minds, until a physical crisis forces them to stop and re-evaluate (or just take a Rennie!). Flood plains exist for a reason, yet we consciously choose to build on them and wonder why those apartments get flooded regularly.
Despite the fact that we have been moving through the Virgoan time of year since the 22nd August at 6:06pm (BST), the lunation is only taking place on the 16th September, 6 days before the Sun moves into Libra. However, the lunation is a perfect time to re-ignite all facets of the Virgoan consciousness, not just the one I am writing about. It is a chance to really listen to an area of, or person in, your life, letting them/ it speak to you, rather than you applying your mind onto that area or person. It is a chance to start afresh and to allow a new level of awareness to penetrate your very being. You can chose to do that without the aid of your birth chart and simply meditate on whoever/ whatever you need to listen to. Alternatively you can use your birth chart as a guide to understand what arena, or person, is being brought into focus with during this forth coming lunation. Irrespectively of whether you are born during the Virgoan period of the year or not, everyone’s birth signature contains this Virgoan pattern and it lies in a zone in your chart, called a house. This house highlights an arena of life wherein you will perpetually experience this spark of curiosity and a need to listen more carefully.
To understand where Virgo falls in your chart you will need to look at your birth chart and locate where the sign of Virgo falls in your chart and make a note of the house that this sign occupies. To do this, please follow the four simple steps:
- If you are a client, then Virgo is coloured green on the chart I gave you during your session. Alternatively it looks like a “M” (without the tail)
- The forthcoming lunation is taking place at the end of tropical Virgo, so you will need to look towards the end of this sign to locate it within your chart
- There are 12 houses, or zones, in a birth chart and they refer to the areas of life experience wherein the archetypal potential of your life will find an outlet for expression. If you imagine your chart to be a wheel, the houses are contained within the thin black line portions which makes the birth circle look like possessing spokes. (Please note that the houses are listed in an anti-clockwise manner, so the first house cusp is at the 9 o’clock position (if you pretend that the horoscope is a clock)).
- The picture below depicts a birth chart, with the position of the lunation on the outside, which will fall within the 1st house.
- For those more technically inclined, you could check what planets in your chart are being triggered by making a note of any points that are at 23° (plus or minus 3°), since this lunation will harmonise with those points. Also, you could check any point that falls at 7° of Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius).
Since consciousness is the key factor in determining the quality of your life, there are differing levels to which each arena of a chart can manifest. The left hand chart (figure 3) illustrates in a one-word concept the practical manifestation of the houses; whereas the right hand chart (figure 4) illustrates a one-word concept of the archetypal or spiritual manifestation of the houses.

In summary, what I am asking you to reflect on is that Earth is not inert. Matter is conscious, maybe not in the verbally-elite and rational way to which we have become so accustomed, but it is conscious! Our knowledge does not stem from testing and observing nature. It stems from living within a vast field of intelligence that permeates and bathes us within it. It stems from the dialogue that nature has WITH us and from those who developed the ability to listen and translate what was being disseminated into practical applications. Nature contains memory; it thinks; and if we take the time to listen to it, we can derive much meaning, sustenance and knowledge that will help us through the massive and rapid changes that are taking place within our individual and collective consciousness. In the same way, the art of really listening enables us to hear without judgement. It helps us develop compassion and true empathy for all living things, including ourselves. In order to ensure that our soul is healthy at the details of daily living, we need to successfully manage the lessons of our daily reality so that we can start to focus on the next stage of our life. We cannot give of ourselves in relationship without being whole onto ourselves. Meditating on the two way exchange of information between yourself and matter during this Virgoan lunation will help you feel much more capable and able to connect with others on equal terms which is the message of the next lunation, that of Libra!
